Yes, with the same interest rate and inflation rate, you actually lose!
Why? Because assume you have 12% annual return for 1 year.
But for each investment, it's not 12% — it's 12%, 11%, 10%, 9%... down to 1%.
So, return on total investment is less than 12%.
Now, in case of 12% inflation, it cuts more than the return.
That works in case of lump sum only (zero gain, not negative).
